Weddings are sacred moments that are celebrated in different ways in different cultures. In Indonesia, couples have two main options for organising a wedding: a traditional wedding and an international (modern) wedding. Each has its characteristics. Here's an explanation of the differences between the two:
1. Concept and theme
- Traditional weddings highlight the customs and culture of a particular region, such as Javanese, Sundanese, Minang, Batak and others. Each custom has a unique procession and deep philosophical meaning.
- International weddings (modern or western-style weddings) usually adopt a Western wedding concept, with an elegant and minimalist feel. They are often held in buildings or outdoor venues such as parks or beaches.
2. Wedding Dress
- Traditional: The bride and groom wear full traditional dress according to the region, such as Javanese kebaya and beskap, Minang baju kurung or Batak ulos. Accessories and make-up are distinctive and more detailed.
- International: The bride usually wears a white dress and the groom a suit or tuxedo.
3. Procession & Ceremony
- Traditional: Includes a series of traditional rituals such as siraman, midodareni, akad/adat, panggih and reception. All processions have symbolic significance.
- International: Generally shorter, starting with the blessing or vows, then the reception. There are not as many symbolic ceremonies as in the traditional.
4. Decorations & ambience
- Traditional: Decorations are rich in regional ornaments, many ethnic elements, gold, red or traditional colours.
- International: More modern and simple, with a predominance of pastel or white colours, fresh flowers and minimalist or rustic styles of decoration.
5. Cost and preparation time
- Traditional: Tends to be more expensive and takes longer to prepare due to the complexity of the procession and traditional paraphernalia.
- International: More flexible in terms of budget and more practical, as there are fewer processes.
6. Cultural Values
- Traditional: Preserve cultural values and ancestral customs.
- International: More emphasis on aesthetics, comfort and modern lifestyle.
